Research

The Calvary Mater Newcastle conducts over 80% of all cancer research in the Hunter region.

The hospital participates extensively in medical research, with a research output that is the envy of much larger institutions. Participating in research allows the hospital to provide patients with the latest in health care and knowledge.

Calvary Mater Newcastle is home to many world class experts and research groups. There is a large concentration of cancer-related research which covers the areas of:

  • Radiation Oncology
  • Medical Oncology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Radiation Physics
  • Haematology
  • Immunology & Oncology Unit

The hospital is also a site for collaborative cancer clinical trials groups. Other specialist research areas at Calvary Mater Newcastle include:

  • Toxicology
  • Pharmacology
  • Palliative Care
  • Emergency & General Medicine
  • Psychiatry

Researchers at the hospital work closely with the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), the University of Newcastle and many other Australian and international collaborators.

Calvary Mater researchers have been able to attract significant funds to support their research activities. However, further funds are always required to continue and enhance these activities which are ultimately of benefit not only to our hospital patients, but to all people with cancer and other illnesses.
